Gopher Women Split Forces For Two Meets
No. 9 Minnesota will split its squad to compete in a pair of meets this weekend. The Golden Gophers’ top 12 runners will travel to Brookings, S.D., to compete in the South Dakota State Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 3. Another contingent of Maroon and Gold will compete in the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Open on Friday, Oct. 2 in Colfax, Wis.
Two Races, Two Titles for Duwell
Senior Megan Duwell has captured medalist honors in both races this season, winning the Oz Memorial Run and the Griak Invitational. Duwell has the chance to accomplish a Minnesota first on Saturday. No Gopher has ever won three consecutive individual race titles. Duwell and teammate Jamie Cheever own the distinction of winning back-to-back titles. Cheever accomplished the feat in 2007, winning the Oz Memoiral and the South Dakota State Invitational.
Duwell Wins Griak Title, Honored by Big Ten
Minnesota senior Megan Duwell captured her second Big Ten Runner of the Week accolade of the season today as the Conference office recognized her accomplishment of winning the individual title at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday. A West Bend, Wis., native, Duwell is the first Golden Gopher to capture two Big Ten Runner of the Week awards in the same season. Duwell was also honored by the Big Ten after winning the Oz Memorial Run title earlier this month.
Duwell bettered the Griak field by over 12 seconds, crossing the finish line in a time of 21 minutes, 0.37 seconds. The time is the fourth-fastest in Minnesota history by a Golden Gopher runner on their home 6-kilometer course at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights. Duwell became just the second Gopher to capture medalist honors at the prestigious Griak Invitational, joining Rasa (nee Michnoivaite) Troup (1998).
