The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that Minnesota freshman goaltender Noora Räty has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Golden Gophers to a two-game sweep over Minnesota Duluth last weekend. In the first three weeks of the season, Minnesota has received a conference player of the week accolades each time. Chelsey Jones (Oct. 7) and Sarah Erickson (Oct. 14) were each named as the WCHA Offensive Players of the Week, while Räty becomes the first Gopher to receive a defensive accolade.

Räty, hailing from Espoo, Finland, had two great performances in net to lead the No. 2-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers to a two-game WCHA series sweep over then-No. 5 UMD on Oct. 16-17. In her first game against the Bulldogs last Friday, Räty stopped two breakaways and 22 of 23 UMD shots on goal for her third win of the season as Minnesota won 3-1. She then followed with her first career shutout as a Golden Gopher last Saturday when she deflected all 29 Bulldog shots on goal for her fourth win of the season in a 3-0 victory. With the 29 saves, she tied her career-high save mark of her short Gopher career. On the weekend, Räty had a total of 51 saves, held a .981 saves percentage and a 0.50 goals-against average.

Räty and the rest of the Golden Gophers will take on the St. Cloud State Huskies this weekend in a home-and-home series. Friday’s game is set for 2:07 p.m. at the National Hockey Center, while Saturday’s contest is scheduled for a 4:07 p.m. start at Ridder Arena.
