Puga Notches Top-10 Finish in Vegas

The Gophers (299-310-307 – 916) finished in a tie for 14th place at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown after the final round of play. With its final round score of 300, Arizona (284-294-300 – 878) won the invitational by five strokes over the University of Florida.

Teresa Puga (73-77-70 – 220) led the way for the Gophers in Las Vegas. Her impressive final round moved her in to a tie for sixth place at four-over par. Puga started on the par five 13th hole and bogeyed her first two holes to start her final round. She then finished the rest of her round at four-under par. Puga started the day in a tie for 33rd place.

Samantha Sommers (78-74-78 – 230) finished in a tie for 48th place and Jackie Shepherd (75-76-80 – 231) was right behind her in a tie for 54th place. Also contributing for the Gophers was Michele Edlin (75-88-79 – 242) and Christine Herzog (76-83-83 – 242), both finishing in a tie for 85th place.

Taking home medalist honors for the team champions, Arizona, was Sherlyn Popelka (69-69-71 – 209). Popelka started the day tied with Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville, but her final round 71 left her two shots clear of Juneau.

The Gophers have concluded their spring season with the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown and will resume play in January with the Alumni Challenge in Scottsdale, Arizona on Jan. 29-21, 2010.
