Koprivica and Ferrazzi Post Wins at Cal Invite

Minnesota's Tijana Koprivica and Alessandra Ferrazzi each won their opening singles match before losing to highly-ranked opponents in the Cal/Nike Invitational over the weekend in Berkeley, Calif.

Both players won their opening singles matches in the main draw with Koprivica besting Melissa McQueen of Fresno State 6-2, 6-3 and Ferrazzi rolling over Ashlee Brown of Arizona State 6-1, 6-4.

They were both knocked out in the round of 16 by the eventual finalists. Koprivica took the first set from the nation's 11th-ranked player, Yasmin Schnak of UCLA, before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Ferrazzi lost to 18th-ranked Marina Cossou of California 6-2, 6-3. Schnak went on to defeat Cossou 6-0, 6-3 in the finals on Sunday.

Both Gopher players played singles consolation matches as Ferrazzi won her lone consolation match over Christina Goehl of Pacific 6-1, 6-3. Koprivica lost both of her matches to 71st-ranked Anna-Maria Constantinescu of Oklahoma 7-6 (3), 6-3, and 69th-ranked Jenifer Widjaja of Pacific 2-6, 6-3, (10-7).

In doubles, Koprivica and Ferrazzi lost their opening match to Cristala Andrews and Valeria Pulido of Southern California 9-7. They won their first consolation match over Kacie Wagner and Kimi Cox of Santa Clara 8-5, but then lost to the nation's 29th-ranked tandem, McCall Jones and Megan Price of Brigham Young, 8-4. They finished the weekend with a win over McQueen and Olga Kirpicheva of Fresno State 8-4.

The Gophers will be in action again Oct. 9-11 when they send a full team to the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
