Food and Toy Drives Scheduled for Upcoming Events
11/10/2009 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
The University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics department will hold a combination of four food drives and two toy drives at various U of M athletic events. Four food drives have taken place, while an additional four will come in the next two weeks. The toy drives will start in the first week of December.
The remaining food drives will begin this weekend at the men’s basketball home opener vs. Tennessee Tech (Nov. 13) and at women’s basketball game vs. Lamar (Nov. 15), both located at Williams Arena. The following week, the food drive will move to Mariucci Arena and men’s hockey, where the Gophers face Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 20. The final food drive location will be at Ridder Arena at the Gopher women’s hockey game vs. Bemidji State (Nov. 21). The toy drives will be held at the men’s basketball game vs. Brown (Dec. 5) and at the women’s basketball game vs. Penn State (Dec. 6).
Along with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and their group, Maroon-Madness, Gopher athletes will volunteer and stand at multiple arena entrances before and during the games asking for charitable contributions for food or monetary donations. The University of Minnesota has already raised $1,248 and over 1,000 pounds of food in its first four drives at soccer (Sept. 18 and 20), volleyball (Nov. 8) and men’s basketball (Nov. 9). This is the 10th year the University of Minnesota has held a food drive at various Gopher athletic events.
The food collected during all the drives will go to Second Harvest Heartland, the upper Midwest's largest hunger-relief organization. Also, when money is contributed, the organization has the ability to distribute $9 of groceries for every dollar donated, according to Second Harvest Heartland’s website. All toys received during the drives will be donated to St. Joseph’s Home for Children, a charity that cares for children in immediate need by giving them shelter, stability and long-term solutions to emotional and behavioral issues, according to information provided by Catholic Charities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
