Having posted a career-high 45 saves in Saturday's win at Wisconsin, Minnesota junior goaltender Alex Kangas has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week.
Kangas, a Rochester, Minn. native, also won the award twice last season and was the league's Rookie of the Week twice during the 2007-08 season. He stopped 73 of 79 shots in last weekend's series and held the Badgers scoreless on eight power play chances, stopping all 17 shots. Kangas stopped all 32 shots in the first two periods of Saturday's 5-2 victory and made 28 saves in a 4-2 loss on Friday.
He currently ranks 11th in the country with a .933 save percentage and he owns a 2.35 goals against average.
It is the second straight week a Minnesota player has been honored with a WCHA weekly honor as Tony Lucia was the league's Offensive Player of the Week last week.
The Gophers host seventh-ranked Bemidji State in a two-game series this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
