University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving head coach Dennis Dale announced today that Drew Johnson (Chaska, Minn.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Minnesota.

A senior at Edina High School, Johnson was the 2009 Minnesota State champion in the 100 and 200 freestyles and 400 freestyle relay as a junior. He helped lead Edina to back-to-back state titles in 2008 and 2009 under legendary head coach Art Downey. Johnson is a multiple-time NISCA High School All-American and Junior Nationals qualifier. He also competes for Team Foxjet and coach Ann Urschel.

"We identified Drew very early in the recruiting process,” assistant coach Bill Tramel said. “We knew he would be a perfect fit at Minnesota. He’s been a Gopher fan his entire life. He is close to his family and staying close to home was important to him. He committed immediately after his visit to Minnesota on the September 12 weekend. It was his only visit. We have had so many Minnesota high school state champions carry on their careers at Minnesota. We expect Drew to thrive at Minnesota.”

His top times are 45.15 in the 100 free, 1:38.95 in the 200 free, 50.6 in the 100 butterfly and 21.28 in the 50 free (short course yards).
Johnson is the first member of the 2009-10 Gopher signing class.
