Minnesota head women’s cross country coach Gary Wilson has been honored as the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Region Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Gopher to their third consecutive NCAA Midwest Region team title. Wilson has been named the regional winner of the coach of the year award for three consecutive seasons as well.
“I’m a much better coach when I have great athletes,” joked Wilson, who is in his 25th season heading the Golden Gopher program. “Seriously, this award has my name on it but it is truly a team effort. I share this honor with my associate head coach Sarah Hesser and an outstanding group of young women in our program.”
Wilson and the Gophers head into Monday’s NCAA Cross Country Championships ranked No. 13 in the nation. Minnesota has a streak of four straight top-12 NCAA finishes, an accomplishment that only Stanford and Illinois can match. The NCAA Championships will be televised live on Monday by the Versus Network.
