Minnesota Travels to Iowa
The Golden Gophers travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Hawkeyes, Friday night at 5 p.m. at the University Field House Pool. The last time the Gophers faced Iowa came last year at the University Aquatic Center. Minnesota hopes to go 2-0 on the dual season after a win at Wisconsin last weekend.
Last Year Against the Hawkeyes
The Gophers won 12 of 16 events en route to a 185-110.5 win over the Hawkeyes last year. Minnesota won both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. Also winning events were Lissa Tommerdahl (1,000 free), Hannah Whitehead (200 free), Kaylee Jamison (100 breast), Kait Strickland (200 fly), Meredith McCarthy (50 free), Jenny Shaughnessy (200 back), Kim Kazika (200 breast), Ashley Steenvoorden (500 free), Deidre DeWall (100 fly) and Jillian Tyler (200 IM).
About the Hawkeyes
Iowa opened the season with a win against Truman State, a loss to Wisconsin, and wins versus Michigan State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, while adding its fourth win of the season against Missouri State last weekend. The Hawkeyes defeated the Bears, 188-112. Last year, the Hawkeyes finished ninth at the Big Ten Championships with 137 points.
Bryant Named Big Ten Diver of the Week
The Big Ten Conference has announced that sophomore diver Kelci Bryant has been named the Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week for her performance last weekend against Wisconsin. It is the Golden Gophers’ first honor of the season and Bryant’s first of her short Minnesota career. In her first meet as a Golden Gopher, sophomore Bryant won both the one-meter and the three-meter competitions in Friday’s dual win against Wisconsin. Bryant, a transfer from the University of Miami, claimed top honors in the one-meter with a score of 323.33, besting the runner-up mark by more than 65 points. She followed that performance with her second win of the night when she took the three-meter event with a score of 374.10, almost a full 70 points ahead of the second-place finisher. Both marks were good enough to qualify for NCAA zone diving competition. With the award, Bryant returns the weekly diving laurel to Minnesota for the first time since Jacqueline Schroeder accomplished the feat in November of 2007.
On the Blocks
Minnesota will host its first home meet of the season, and only home event of the first half, next weekend. The Minnesota Grand Prix will begin Friday, Nov. 13, and continues until Sunday, Nov. 15. All three days begin with swimming competition at 9 a.m. Minnesota will then take two weeks off from competition to prepare for the Ohio State Invitational, Dec. 4-6, in Columbus, Ohio.
