Minnesota Heads South to Face Iowa

11/5/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving

The University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team will head to Iowa City, Iowa to face the University of Iowa Friday. Minnesota defeated the Hawkeyes last season, 195-92, at the University Aquatic Center and the Golden Gophers have won nine straight against the Hawkeyes.

Last week, Minnesota defeated Wisconsin, 198-101, in Madison to open its dual season 1-0. The Gophers won 15 of 16 events in the victory, including three wins by senior Alex Wold. Diver Drew Brown’s performance in the 3-meter diving event earned him his first Co-Big Ten Diver of the Week honors in diving head coach Wenbo Chen’s first dual meet with Minnesota. The last time a Gopher diver earned the honor was Cole Young in November of 2007.

“Last week’s meet was pretty good for us. We didn’t swim exceptionally well, but we swam well enough to get the job done. It’s always good to get a win,” assistant coach Bill Tramel said. “Moving on to Iowa, Iowa should provide a tougher test for us. They beat Wisconsin, which would lend you to believe they are a better team. It should be a more challenging meet.”
