Minnesota Cruises to Exhibition Win Over UMD

Kiara Buford scored 19 points to lead Minnesota to a 77-45 victory over Minnesota-Duluth in an exhibition game at Williams Arena on Sunday. The Golden Gophers open their regular season in a week on Sunday, Nov. 15, when they play host to Lamar.


Minnesota scored 22 points off Bulldog turnovers in the first half to take a commanding 42-20 lead at halftime. Freshman guard Leah Cotton was impressive, scoring 10 points (she finished with 15), while grabbing three steals in the opening period of play. Four of Cotton’s first-half points came during an early 17-0 run that gave Minnesota a 20-4 lead and control of the game.

The Gophers’ defense continued to dominate play in the second half as Minnesota outscored UMD by a 27-7 margin in the first 10 minutes. Minnesota tallied its biggest lead of 44 points during the run when freshman center Amber Dvorak hit a short jumper to push the score to 73-29.

Jackie Voigt and Brianna Mastey also reached double digits for scoring with 11 points each. Voigt added seven rebounds.

All 14 Gophers saw action in the game, with 10 entering the scoring column.
