Gophers Travel to No. 9 Harvard This Weekend

GOPHERS TRAVEL EAST TO FACE HARVARD
The No. 2 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team faces No. 9 Harvard, this weekend in Cambridge, Mass. It’s the second-straight weekend the Golden Gophers will compete in non-conference action and against a ranked opponent. Minnesota is 8-4-0 against the Crimson, including two wins last year at Ridder. The last time the Gophers played at Harvard was November 27, 2004 in the Harvard Thanksgiving Tournament and won, 5-3.

Minnesota closes out the first half of the season at North Dakota (12/12-13). Minnesota’s next home series comes Jan. 8-9 when Ohio State comes to town. Team USA plays the Gophers on a quick turnaround on the following Tuesday, Jan. 12, also at Ridder Arena.
ABOUT THE CRIMSON
The No. 9 Harvard Crimson enters the Minnesota series with a 6-3-1 record and a 6-3-0 mark within the ECAC. Led by 16-year head coach Katey Stone, the Crimson have been a dominant east-coast team, appearing in five NCAA Frozen Fours and winning six conference titles. The Crimson holds a five-game unbeaten streak. Harvard’s only non-conference game to date came on Nov. 18 when it tied New Hampshire, 1-1. Harvard also defeated Yale (Nov. 20), Brown (Nov. 21), and Dartmouth (Nov. 25). The Crimson are led in scoring by junior forward Kate Buesser with 14 points, while freshman forward Jillian Dempsey has 11 points and junior forward Katharine Chute and junior defenseman Josephine Pucci has seven. Senior goalie Christina Kessler has been in goal for all 10 games this season and holds a 1.51 goals against average and a .940 save percentage.
AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
With the Harvard series, Minnesota is playing its fourth ranked opponent of the season. Prior to the series against the Crimson, Minnesota has gone 4-2 against ranked teams this year. Minnesota earned two wins against then-No. 5 Minnesota Duluth (10/16-17), had its only two losses of the season to then-No. 9 Wisconsin (10/30-11/1) and earned another series sweep over then-No. 3 Clarkson (11/27-28).
