Richards Leads Minnesota at the Ohio State Invitational

With a victory in the 50 freestyle, junior Michael Richards led the No. 11th-ranked Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Gophers currently sit in second after the first day of competition at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Minnesota went 1-2 in the 50 free with Richards taking first in 19.92, while junior Curt Carlson took second in 20.17. Both swimmers earned NCAA-B qualifying times. Also finishing in the top-eight was junior Goran Majlat in seventh (20.73). In the consolation final, Ray Betuzzi and Kevin Basheart tied for 13th overall (20.94) and Zach Bolin finished 15th overall (21.17).
In the 200 free relay, the Minnesota A squad finished in second place with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 1:19.77. Richards led off the relay with Carlson, Baseheart and Majlat following behind the Falcon Heights, Minn. native.
Senior Ray Betuzzi swam a B-qualifying time of 4:28.08 in the 500 free, finishing seventh. Also finishing in the top-16 was Michael McBroom in eighth (4:30.56), Matt Benecki in 10th (4:30.72), Nico Zebley in 11th (4:31.50) and Michael Daup in 15th (4:34.10).
Also earning a B-qualifying time tonight was Gopher captain Alex Wold in the 200 individual medley. Wold swam a time of 1:49.20 to finish in seventh place. Teammate Mark Solfelt finished 12th overall (1:51.93).
In the 400 medley relay, the Minnesota A team finished in second with a B-qualifying time of 3:15.09. The team was comprised of sophomore Karl Burdis, junior Ivan Gutesa, Baseheart and Carlson.
Diver Drew Brown finished in fourth place with 355.65 points on the 1-meter diving event.
Minnesota will continue competing at the Ohio State Invitational tomorrow in Columbus, Ohio. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. and finals will start at 5 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
