Minnesota Leads After First Day of Ohio State Invitational

After the first day of the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, the 12th-ranked University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team leads with 365 points. Minnesota won five of six events tonight at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Minnesota started the day with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 1:31.98. Leading off for the Gophers was junior Alison Eggers, who was followed by junior Meagan Radecke, junior Kaylee Jamison and sophomore Marissa Davies.
In the 500 freestyle, Minnesota finished 1-2-3 with sophomore Ashley Steenvoorden taking first with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 4:44.75. Finishing behind Steenvoorden was sister Kristen in second place (4:45.78) and freshman Loren Brandon in third (4:46.37), earning both of them B-qualifying times. Also earning B-qualifying times was Davies in fifth place (4:46.90), freshman Lauren Weis in eighth (4:49.93), sophomore Hannah Whitehead in ninth (4:47.78) and Lissa Tommerdahl in 10th (4:50.78).
Minnesota also went 1-2 in the 200 individual medley. Junior Jillian Tyler took first in 2:01.48, while junior Molly Belk took second in 2:01.64. Both swimmers earned NCAA-B qualifying times. Freshman Haley Spencer also had a B-qualifying time (2:01.86), taking fourth place. Also finishing in the top-10 was Elizabeth Weitz in seventh (2:04.10) and Paige Bradley in eighth (2:05.06).
Sophomore diver Kelci Bryant continued her outstanding form this season with a first-place finish in the 3-meter diving event. Bryant won the even with 370.40 points.
In the 400 medley relay, the Gophers took both first and second place. The Minnesota A team comprised of Whitehead, Tyler, Jamison and Eggers took first with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 3:38.64. Minnesota’s B squad of Castina Wabeke, Haley Spencer, Megan Braun and Davies took second in 3:43.59.
Eggers led Minnesota in the 50 free with a second place finish and an NCAA-B qualifying time of 22.92. Following behind Eggers was Meagan Radecke in fifth (23.41), Kaylee Jamison in ninth (23.16), Marissa Davies in 10th (23.52) and Abigail Staats in 12th 23.76.
Minnesota will continue competing at the Ohio State Invitational tomorrow in Columbus, Ohio. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. and finals will start at 5 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
