Minnesota Finishes Second Day of Invite

The 11th-ranked University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team finished up the second day of competition tonight at the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. Captain Alex Wold led the Golden Gophers with a win in the 800 free relay and a second-place finish in the 400 IM at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Wold led off the 800 freestyle relay that finished with an NCAA-B qualifying time of 6:29.86 and took first place. Following behind the Gopher captain was junior Curt Carlson, senior Ray Betuzzi and junior Kevin Baseheart.
In the 400 individual medley, Wold finished in second with a B-qualifying time of 3:50.15. Also finishing in the top-16 was Michael McBroom in ninth (3:59.15), Rob Schaefer in 12th (4:01.55) and Nico Zebley in 14th (4:02.44).
Minnesota also finished in second place in the 200 medley relay. The Minnesota A team swam a time of 1:28.42, earning the group an NCAA-B qualifying time. The group consisted of juniors Nadav Kochavi, Rob Schnitzler, Baseheart and Michael Richards.
Captain Ray Betuzzi led Minnesota in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish in 1:37.39. The time earned the native of Calgary, Alberta a B-qualifying time. Also finishing in the top-16 was Curt Carlson in seventh (1:38.98), Matt Papenfuss in 13th (1:40.52) and Zach Bolin in 15th (1:40.71).
In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Karl Burdis led the Gophers with a fourth-place finish in 49.16. Nadav Kochavi finished behind Burdis in 13th (50.88).
Minnesota had four swimmers finish in the top-16 in the 100 breaststroke. Junior Ivan Gutesa led the group with a sixth-place finish in 55.70. Coming behind him was Schnitzler in seventh (55.86), Jared Anderson in 11th (56.99) and Josh Hall in 13th (57.28).
In the 100 butterfly Baseheart took fifth in 48.69, while Kochavi took seventh in 49.38.
Diver Drew Brown took eighth in the three-meter diving event with a score of 315.30. Yesterday, he took fourth in the 1-meter.
Minnesota concludes competition at the Ohio State Invitational tomorrow. The Gophers will start with preliminaries at 9 a.m. before starting finals at 3 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
