Minnesota Brittany McCoy banked in a three-pointer from the left wing with 1.9 seconds remaining to give the Golden Gophers a 60-59 victory at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday. Minnesota improved to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in Big Ten play.
“We got a break tonight; we were lucky to win this game,” said Golden Gopher head coach Pam Borton. “I’m nut sure Brittany even realized that we didn’t have to go for a three pointer.”
McCoy scored all seven of her points and dished out six of her team-high seven assists in the second half. Kay Sylva and Ashley Ellis-Milan led the Gophers with 12 points a piece.
“I saw the clock running down and was open for three,” McCoy said of her first collegiate game-winner. “At the last second I caught Krista Phillips coming at me and I think she may have even tipped the ball. The ball wasn’t heading toward the rim so I didn’t think it had a chance to go in. Then the bench erupted and ran at me on the court. I don’t even remember what happened after that.
Michigan took a time-out and set up a desperation shot taken by Stephanie Skrba from half court that bounced hard off the backboard.
The Gophers needed another dramatic comeback in the final four minutes to steal a victory in Ann Arbor.
Wolverine center Krista Phillips hit a three-pointer with 3:50 remaining to give Michigan (10-15, 3-11 Big Ten) at 54-47 lead. Phillips triple was the eighth three-pointer of the game for the Wolverines.
Emily Fox scored only eight points in the game, but her back-to-back three-pointers ignited the very important comeback for the Gophers. Her second trey with 2:58 left brought the Gophers to within a point at 54-53.
Michigan’s Jessica Minnfield answered with a lay-in. The teams exchanged missed field goals, with Fox blocking a Minnfield three-pointer at the 2-minute mark. McCoy hit a pull-up baseline jumper with 1:54 left to draw Minnesota once again to within a point at 56-55.
Minnfield had the chance to put the game away for the Wolverines. She hit both ends of bonus with 43 seconds left to put Michigan up 58-55. The Gophers ran a quick set and found Ellis-Milan open for a left-handed lay-in.
It wasn’t the plan but Minnfield ended up at the line once again in the bonus situation. With 15 seconds left, she made the first free throw then missed the second. The rebound bounced long and Minnfield collected the ball and the Gophers were forced to foul her immediately. With 12 seconds remaining, Minnfield went to the line once again.
With the game on the line, she missed the free throw and Ellis-Milan grabbed the rebound. She passed the ball to McCoy who rushed up the court. As the clock counted down, McCoy fired from the left wing. The ball may have been tipped as the basketball banked home for the game winner.
The Gophers used a 17-0 run to take a 26-24 lead at halftime. Minnesota missed its first six shots and made just three of its first 19, before the Gophers made seven of nine to end the half. Sylva scored all 12 points in the first half.
Minnesota plays host to Big Ten co-leader Ohio State on Thursday. Minnesota is one game out of first-place, behind Ohio State and Michigan State.
