Support the Golden Gopher Fund
Thank you for considering making a gift to Golden Gopher athletics. Below you will find information and links on the variety of ways to make a gift.
All gifts to the Golden Gopher Fund are considered gifts to the University of Minnesota and are credited at full value for purposes of the donor’s giving history at the University.
Cash and Cash Pledges
Cash gifts can be made through checks payable to the University of Minnesota Foundation or by using Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.
Donors can designate annual gifts to a sport(s) of choice, to the Berg Fund (women’s general scholarship fund), the Williams Fund (men’s general scholarship fund), or make an unrestricted annual scholarship gift to the Golden Gopher Fund.
Future Gifts
Includes gifts that produce an income, gifts by will, bequests or trust.
Matching Gifts
Many employers match charitable contributions made by their employees. If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest. The impact of your gift may be doubled or possibly tripled!
Funding Your Gift
Gifts may be funded with cash, securities, property, and more.
Maintaining a top Division I athletics program requires sustained resources that can be relied on year after year. With that in mind, scholarship endowments are a top fundraising priority and the focus of the Forever Gold Scholarship Program.
The cost of athletics scholarships at the University of Minnesota has risen dramatically in the last ten years. An in-state scholarship (tuition, books, fees, and room & board) costs $19,000 a year. The total scholarship cost for the athletics department each year now totals nearly $8.8 million.
Forever Gold was created to establish and strengthen long-term endowments which provide scholarship money year after year through annual investment and interest income. A gift of $25,000 or more is required to establish a new endowment. Endowed scholarships can be named for the donor or a donor-designated honoree, and naming opportunities are based upon the size of the endowment gift.
A donor or group of donors can create an endowment fund to benefit Golden Gopher Athletics, and gifts can be made in a variety of ways.
1. Contribute cash or an appreciated securities gift, either as a one-time donation or as a pledge with payments made over time.
2. Make a bequest that includes U of M Athletics in your will.
3. Establish a charitable remainder trust or gift annuity.
4. Make an honorary or memorial gift.
Endowment gifts are invested and a portion of the return is used each year to support the designated program. Your gift can permanently endow a variety of student-athlete scholarships and tuition awards. The following are several examples of support levels and what each can provide.
GOLD LEVEL ENDOWMENT
Each endowment of $300,000 and above provides a named, fully funded scholarship (tuition, room and board) for a specific team position. For example, the John Doe Football Scholarship for a Quarterback.
MAROON LEVEL ENDOWMENT
Each endowment of $150,000–$299,999 provides a named, partially funded scholarship (partial tuition and fees, room and board) for a particular sport. For example, the John and Jane Doe Scholarship for Women’s Basketball.
BRONZE LEVEL ENDOWMENT
Each endowment of $25,000–$149,999 establishes a fund for a future named scholarship. For example, the Doe Family Athletics Scholarship.
Please note that certain restrictions may apply to naming opportunities. In addition, tuition and other student expenses are periodically adjusted by the University Board of Regents to keep pace with the cost of education. The University of Minnesota Foundation requires a minimum gift of $25,000 to establish an endowment.
