Seniors Ibrahim Kabia and Walter Langkau won events as the Minnesota men’s track & field team won eight events at the Snowshoe Open in the University Fieldhouse on Friday. The Golden Gopher seniors were honored throughout the meet, Minnesota’s final home indoor meet of the season.
“We rested a lot of guys for next week (Big Ten Championships), but the ones who competed tonight had a very solid meet,” said Golden Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia. “It was also a great chance for us to recognize our seniors.”
Kabia won the 60-meter dash with an NCAA provisional team of 6.71 seconds, his fifth qualifying mark of the season. The All-American sprinter heads into next week’s Big Ten Championships with the Conference’s top time 6.64 seconds.
Langkau won the 600-meters in a time of 1 minute, 22.59 seconds. It was Langkau’s first race at the distance this season.
Two other Gopher seniors, Mike Linnemann and Sayfe Jassim, ran legs of the winning 4x400-meter relay. Joining with Logan Stroman and Blake Bowers, the squad clocked a time of 3:17.55.
Junior Aaron Studt provided the top performance for the Gophers in the field events. Studt landed a career-best effort of 66 feet, 11 inches in placing second in the weight throw. The throw, which improves on Studt’s NCAA provisional mark, is the third best in Gopher history.
Brock Spandl won the marathon pole vault competition which ran 3 1/2 hours in length due the size of the field. Spandl cleared his season-best height at 16-8 3/4, matching his career high and the 10th-best mark in school history.
Raymond Blackledge enjoyed his season best in the triple jump winning with a leap of 48-3 1/2, just two inches off his career best.
Luke Silovich clocked his season-best time of 8.20 to win the 60-meter hurdles. His time was just a hundredth of a second off his career best. Both Blackledge and Silovich are seniors academically but have the option of competing in their fifth year in 2010.
The last event to finish was the shot put. Tyler Kleinhuizen won his first event title, landing a throw of 55-7 and provided the Gophers’ with their eighth event of the meet.
The Golden Gophers travel to Penn State next weekend, Feb. 28-March 1, to compete in the Big Ten Conference Championships.
