Gophers Earn 4-1 Win Over Bemidji State

2/28/2009 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

The No. 1 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team had goal scoring from four different individuals in a 4-1 win over Bemidji State, tonight in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. With the win, the Golden Gophers (29-3-3) move one step closer to making the WCHA FINAL FACEOFF Championship next weekend. In order to advance to the championship, teams need to win best two-out-of three.

Minnesota had four goal scorers and a total of 10 skaters earn a point in the win. The Gophers rifled off 42 saves, including 17 in the second and only allowed 17. In all, 16 players attempted shots on BSU goalie Zuzana Tomcikova.

Jen Schoullis got the Gophers on the board when she poked in a goal at 7:13 in the first period. Terra Rasmussen dumped the puck and it trickled to the backboards behind Tomcikova. She stopped the puck, but didn’t notice Kelli Blankenship streaking along the backboard. Blankenship put on a shot just as Tomcikova was getting back between the pipes to make the first save, but couldn’t stop Schoullis with the follow-up.

Minnesota added to its lead when Monique Lamoureux scored her 34th goal of the season at 8:54 in the second. Jocelyne Lamoureux fed sister Monique the puck, while Dagney Willey was credited with the second assist. Jaimie Horton put the Gophers up, 3-0 when she tipped in a Kelly Seeler slapshot at 14:40 in the second for her fourth goal of the season. Melanie Gagnon held the second assist.

BSU’s Marlee Wheelhouse scored her third goal of the season when the Beavers took advantage of a 5-on-3 attempt at 18:10 in the second period. Annie Bauerfeld and Erin Cody assisted on the power-play goal.

Minnesota attempted 17 shots on goal, while allowing only three to BSU, including just two during the power play.

Emily West tacked on the final goal when she scored at 16:20 in the third. West scored her 19th goal when she lifted the puck, top-shelf. Gigi Marvin tallied the single assist.

Minnesota will look for its second win over the Beavers tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
