Four current members of the University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team joined one former Gopher to compete in the preliminary rounds of the USA Gymnastics Winter Cup Thursday in Las Vegas.

The current Minnesota gymnasts -- Kit Beikmann, Cole Storer, DJ Repp and Russell Dabritz -- all competed in the evening session Thursday. Former Minnesota gymnast Guillermo Alvarez was also in the evening session. The top 42 combined from each of the two sessions will advance to compete in the finals, slated for Saturday at the Las Vegas Sports Center.

Beikmann, a pommel horse specialist, showed his expertise on the apparatus Thursday night. He finished first among the 38 evening session competitors on the horse. Beikmann scored a 14.550 to tally the high score. The best afternoon session score on the pommel horse was a 15.000. Beikmann's 14.550 was the third best score of the entire day.

Alvarez, a member of last year's U.S. Senior National Team, performed well Thursday night. He finished second on the rings, floor and parallel bars in the evening rotation. Current Gopher DJ Repp was the highest all-around finisher for Minnesota during the preliminary round. Repp, a freshman, was 11th in the all-around for the evening session, including three top 15 finishes of the 38 gymnasts competing in the session.

Another Minnesota freshman -- Russell Dabritz -- finished in a tie for 11th in the session on the still rings. He was also 12th on the high bar. Cole Storer was 13th on the vault.
