Gophers Win Four Events at Minnesota Challenge

The No. 10 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team competed in the first day of the two-day Minnesota Challenge, tonight at the University Aquatic Center. Minnesota won all four events contested. No team scores are kept during the Minnesota Challenge.
The Golden Gophers started the Minnesota Challenge with a win in the 200 free relay. Melissa Nelson, Amanda Borgardt, Corina Hopkins-Vacca and Lauren Smith combined for a time a win in a time of 1:36.39.
Minnesota took home its second win in as many events when Amy Funk won the 500 free in a winning time of 4:57.77. After taking an event off, Minnesota went one, two in the 50 freestyle. Marissa Davies won the event in 23.55, while Nelson finished second in 23.94.
Minnesota closed out the first day with a win in the 400 medley relay. Nelson, Hopkins-Vacca, Smith, Funk concluded the first day with a winning time of 3:51.04.
The Gophers conclude the Minnesota Challenge with two sessions on Saturday. The second session begins at noon, while the third begins at 6 p.m. Prior to the night session, the Gophers will honor their seniors, Stacy Busack, Erin Holtmeyer, Christine Jennings, Yuen Kobayashi, Meredith McCarthy, Danielle Ridder, Jenny Shaughnessy and Kait Strickland.
