Alvarez, Beikmann Finish Strong at Winter Cup

Former University of Minnesota gymnast Guillermo Alvarez and current Gopher Kit Beikmann each wrapped up competition at the Winter Cup Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Alvarez re-qualified for a position on the U.S. Senior National Team. Guillermo Alvarez posted an 88.85 tonight combined with his Day 1 total of 85.65 for a two day total of  174.50 which was good for 4th place overall.

Meanwhile, Beikmann finished posted a top-three finish on the pommel horse. He posted a 14.45 Saturday night to go along with his 14.65 from Thursday. Beikmann’s total of 29.000 was good enough to take third place in this prestigious meet.

“Kit and Guillermo competed extremely well tonight at the Winter Cup,” Burns said late Saturday night. “It's a real pleasure to have guys compete the way they did tonight. The final rankings for Kit on pommel horse and Guillermo in the all-around are a tribute to the hard work and dedication these guys put in daily in the gym.”

The Gophers get back to team competition Saturday. Minnesota will travel to Iowa City, Iowa for a tri-meet with Iowa and Nebraska on Valentine’s Day.
