Minnesota junior Aaron Studt captured his first career All-America honor by placing second in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas, on Friday.

The only Golden Gopher to compete in the NCAA’s first day, Studt landed a career-best throw of 63 feet, 6 1/4 inches on his sixth and final attempt to jump from fifth-place into second. Studt, a native of Ripon, Wis., started his series with an effort of 61-4 which was far enough to qualify the Big Ten champion for the shot put final in the sixth position.

Studt fouled his first attempt of the final and improved his mark to 62-6 to move up a spot to fifth place. His last throw of 63-6 1/4 is the third-best in school history. Arizona State junior Ryan Whiting defended his national title with a throw of 66-1 3/4.

Studt is the fourth Gopher to earn All-America honors in the indoor shot put. Only 1986 national champion Ron Backes posted a better individual finish in the event.

Minnesota will have three athletes compete in events on Saturday Hassan Mead and Chris Rombough in the 3,000-meter run and Matt Fisher in the high jump.
