Minnesota Loses to Texas-Arlington 12-5

The 25th-ranked Minnesota baseball team (10-6) lost to Texas Arlington (9-10) 12-5 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Wednesday, Mar. 18.
Minnesota's night was highlighed by the collegiate debut of Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) who went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI in his first career game for the Golden Gophers. For a second straight game, Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) collected a three hits, as he went 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI and a double. Kvasnicka extended his hitting streak to 21 games with the three-hit performance.
Redshirt freshman Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) and Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) was 2-for-5 on the night.
Golden Gopher starter Scott Fern (Eau Claire, Wis.) took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season, as he gave up 10 hits, five earned runs and two walks in four innings. Tim Ryan (Eagan, Minn.) came in and gave up three hits, one run and collected one strikeout in 1.2 inning of work.
Texas-Arlington got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 2-0. Jay Pitschka led off with a double to right field and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Tim Stegall delivered a bad-hop RBI single to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Stegall moved up to third on a single by Michael Choice, and scored on a fielder's choice RBI ground out by Matt otteman to make it 2-0.
The Mavericks pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the second to take a 6-0 lead. Chad Comer drew a leadoff walk, and moved to second on a passed ball. Comer moved to third on a wild pitch that also was ball four on a walk to Ryan Davis. Mitch Putman plated Comer with an RBI ground out to move the score to 3-0. Evan Raley followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 4-0. Pitschka and Choice also had RBI singles to make it 6-0.
Minnesota got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 6-2. Trip Schultz (Forest Lake, Minn.) drew a leadoff walk, and Pettersen beat out an infield single. Nohelty followed with a single to load the bases with no one out. McCallum brought home the first run for the Golden Gophers on a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Schultz to make it 6-1. Kvasnicka followed with an RBI single to cut the Mavericks' lead to 6-2.
Texas-Arlington pushed its lead to five runs at 7-2 after an RBI double by Andrew Kainer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Golden Gophers scored three in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) started the inning with a leadoff walk, and moved to third on a one-out double by Kvasnicka. Decker drew a walk to load the bases with one out, and O'Shea brought home Geason with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-3. Gominsky followed with two-out, two-run double into the left center field gap to make it 7-5.
Texas Arlington added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Tim Steggall to make it 8-5.
The Mavericks widened the gap with a four-run bottom of the eighth inning. Comer delivered an two-run double to make it 10-5. Ryan Davis finished the scoring with an RBI single that plated Comer and also brought home Kainer as he advanced on a throw to another base to make it 12-5.
Texas-Arlington collected 20 hits on the night, and scored a season-high 12 runs on Minnesota in the game.
Every hitter in the Maverick lineup collected at least a hit and an RBI led by Raley who was 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Steggall was also 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Maverick starter Drew Clementz lasted 4.2 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs, four walks and striking out six batters to get a no-decision. Brian Watson pitched 2.1 shutout inning to collect his first win of the season in relief. Adam Boydston pitched a two shutout innings to close the game to pick up his second save in as many days.
Minnesota will be back in action when it faces Dallas Baptist in a three-game series on Mar. 19-21. The Golden Gophers will face Dallas Baptist on Thursday, Mar. 19 at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Mar. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, Mar. 21 at 1 p.m.
