Tyler Reaches 200 Breast Final At NCAAs

Sophomore Jillian Tyler reached the final of the 200 breaststroke to lead Minnesota in the final preliminaries session of the 2009 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas. Tyler qualified fifth in the 200 breaststroke while senior Stacy Busack reached the consolation final of the 100 freestyle.
Minnesota is in 13th place entering the final night of competition with 92 points. The Gophers are just 4.5 points out of 11th place (Wisconsin) in the tightly-bunched field. Tennessee is 12th with 92 points. An exciting finish for the team title is set up between California (305), Georgia (295.5) and Arizona (282.5).
Minnesota's 400 freestyle relay also qualified ninth overall for the consolation final with a time of 3:15.32. The team consisted of Busack, Meredith McCarthy, Jenny Shaughnessy and Alison Eggers.
Tyler, who was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke last night, went a time of 2:08.75 to qualify fifth for the championship final. Rebecca Soni is first with a time of 2:05.48. In the 100 free, Busack qualified 15th in a time of 48.37. McCarthy finished 26th in 48.78.
In the 200 backstroke, Castina Wabeke placed 29th in a time of 1:55.55 while Hannah Whitehead placed 52nd in 1:59.25. In the 200 butterfly, Megan Braun finished 29th in 1:57.91.
This evening's finals begin at 7 p.m.
