Winthrop Title Within Reach for Gophers

The University of Minnesota women’s golf team improved by 14 strokes Saturday with a combined score of 308 in the second round of the Winthrop Intercollegiate at Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C.

Yale matched the Gophers second round score and is still tied with the locals for third place with 18 holes remaining. Winthrop holds the 36-hole lead by two strokes over Oral Roberts, the first-round leader, and five strokes over Minnesota and Yale. 

Gopher sophomore Teresa Puga started the day with a one stroke lead in the battle for medalist honors. Despite leading the tournament with 27 pars and in par 3 scoring, Puga was surpassed by Winthrop’s Brittany Dabule, who shot a tournament-low round of 73. Puga is tied for third, three shots back of Dabule.

Michele Edlin, who leads the tournament in par 5 scoring, has recorded five birdies in 36 holes and is in eighth place with a 36-hole score of 158 (78-80). Paige Bromen shot a 79 on Saturday, improving on her opening-round score by three strokes and is in a tie for 12th.

Mary Narzisi carded the team’s lowest round of the day with a 3-over par 75 to move up into a tie for 18th place. Samantha Sommers is also in a tie for 18th thanks to a 77 in round two. Sommers and Narzisi improved on their opening round scores by nine and 13 strokes, respectively.

The final round will be on Sunday, with the tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.
