Gophers Finish 11th at NCAA Championships

The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team finished 11th overall at the 2009 NCAA Championships, which concluded today in College Station, Texas, hosted by Texas A&M University.
During the course of the three-day championships, Minnesota garnered 10 All-America honors (both first and honorable mentions) and held its second highest finish in school history and the best finish since 1991-92 when the Gophers placed 10th overall. In 2006-07 and 2007-08, Minnesota finished 13th overall in the nation, only to improve two spots this year. After earning 96 points last year, the Gophers improved their point production by 40 points this season with 136 points. In all, Minnesota had 10 swimmers earn All-America acclaim.
Ashley Steenvoorden earned All-America honors when she finished ninth in the 1,650 freestyle. Steenvoorden, a freshman clocked a finals time of 16:02.57 to finish ninth overall. Yuen Kobayashi finished 18th overall in the same event when she held a time of 16:10.33.
Stacy Busack represented the Gophers in the 100 freestyle as she gained All-America citations. Busack held a prelim time of 48.37, while producing a time of 48.58 in the finals, which was good enough for 12th place.
After her runner-up performance in the 100 breast, Jillian Tyler improved four spots from a year ago and placed third overall. In the preliminaries, Tyler broke her previous school record in the event with a time of 2:08.75. She shaved time off in the finals and set a new school record of 2:07.92 and placed third overall
Minnesota’s 400 free relay of Meredith McCarthy, Stacy Busack, Jenny Shaughnessy and Alison Eggers earned a 10th-place finish at NCAAs. In the prelims, the Gophers clocked a time of 3:15.32, while holding a time of 3:15.74 to finish 10th overall.
