Chiarelli Wins Twice in Loss to Buckeyes

Karina Chiarelli fought off a pair of match points for Minnesota’s lone singles victory in a 5-2 loss to Ohio State on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Chiarelli trailed 6-4 in a third-set tiebreaker against Kirsten Flower at No. 1 singles, but claimed the last four points of the match to pull out a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 victory. She also teamed with Alex Seaton at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Gophers with an 8-5 victory over 80th-ranked Angela DiPastina and Christina Keesey.
Tijana Koprivica and Jackie Sperling combined for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles for Minnesota’s other doubles victory. It marked the eighth consecutive match that Minnesota has won the doubles point.
The Gophers dropped a pair of three-set matches in singles as Tijana Koprivica fell at No. 2 and Magdalena Wiecha was defeated at No. 4. Ohio State’s Paloma Escobedo rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the third set supertiebreaker to defeat Koprivica 3-6, 7-5, (10-8), while Keesey held off Wiecha for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
Seaton lost her No. 3 singles match to Cami Hubbs 6-2, 6-3 and Sperling dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to Julie Blackmore at No. 5. Peta Forsyth fell in her No. 6 singles decision to Angela DiPastina 6-3, 6-1.
The Gophers are now 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten, while 41st-ranked Ohio State remained undefeated in Big Ten play with an 11-6 overall mark and 4-0 league record.
