In conjunction with the St. Jude Medical Foundation and the University of Minnesota CHAMPS/Life Skills Office, the two joined together and visited the Maplewood Middle School on Monday, March 30, 2009. St. Jude strives to make life better for future generations and the Gopher student-athletes were there to promote a healthy lifestyle and pursue an education, particularly in math and science, through their program, Exercise Your Heart and Mind.
The Golden Gopher student-athletes were able to spend time encouraging 60 junior high girls to strive for a full education and to stay active within their daily lives. Participating from Gopher athletics were women's track and field athletes Alicia Rue, Elizabeth Yetzer, Jamie Cheever, Meghan Mason, women's gymnastics' Carmelina Carabajal, Jamie Bullock, Jade Beattie, women's swimming's Meredith McCarthy, rowing's Emily Johnson, softball's Lauren Pockl, and women's tennis athlete Mariana Spilca. The 11 Gopher student-athletes brought science and math alive by creating slime and experimenting with fun math problems. These 11 student-athletes were excellent role models representing strong women who can successfully balance sports and education, while many of them are pursuing degrees in either math or science.
