Kabia, Silovich Collect Regional Qualifiers

Minnesota seniors Ibrahim Kabia and Luke Silovich clocked NCAA regional qualifiers in their events to highlight the Golden Gopher men’s track & field team’s performance at the St. Thomas TomCat Twilight Meet on Friday in St. Paul.

Kabia won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.54 seconds to earn his ticket to the NCAA Midwest Region Championships in May. He also captured the title in the 200 meters in 21.83 seconds. Kabia was also a member of the Gophers’ winning 4x100-meter relay that posted a time of 41.03 seconds.

Silovich collected his first career regional qualifier by winning the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 14.30 seconds, the seventh-best time in Gopher history. The Gophers finished first, second and third in the event with Sean Duling placing second in 14.49 seconds and R.J. McGinnis third in 14.59.

Joe McFarland added another title on the track, winning the 800-meter run in a time of 1:52.49.

Minnesota collected three titles in the field events. Matt Fisher led the way by winning the high jump with a height of 7-0 1/2. Joe Plencner matched his season best in the pole vault winning with a leap of 16-10 3/4. Paul Hoplin won his first title, launching the javelin 201-2.

Two Gopher throwers, Andy Bastian and Aaron Studt, competed on Friday at the Phil Esten Challenge in Winona and both improved on NCAA regional qualifying marks in the hammer. Bastian finished third with a throw of 196-1, while Studt heaved a personal best of 190-7.
