Gophers Finish 13th at Lady Buckeye Invite

The Golden Gopher women’s golf team concluded the 2008-09 regular-season by shooting a 324 in the final round of the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. Minnesota’s 54-hole combined score of 967 was good for 13th place.
Ohio State, the host of the tournament, won the event by 10 strokes over Kent State with a score of 895. OSU’s In Hong Lim shot a tournament low 217 to defeat Michigan State’s Laura Kueny by one stroke and gain medalist honors.
Gopher sophomore Teresa Puga led Minnesota in scoring for the eighth time in 10 events, as she recorded a 54-hole score of 229 (73-79-77) to finish in a tie for 13th place. It was also the eighth time that Puga finished in the top-20 individually. Her stroke average now stands at 75.57 for the season, currently the second-lowest average in school history.
Senior Paige Bromen, playing in her last regular-season tournament, carded a 241 (79-78-84) for the weekend to tie for 52nd. Sophomore Mary Narzisi and senior Kelli Berns both shot 54-hole scores of 251 to tie for 69th place while sophomore Michele Edlin tied for 75th with a score of 253.
Up next for the Gophers are the 2009 Big Ten Championships, scheduled for Apr. 24-26 in West Lafayette, Ind. The event, hosted by Purdue, will be played at Brick Boilermaker Golf Club. Minnesota finished in a tie for eighth place in last year’s event, the team’s best finish in three years.
