McCallum Collects Weekly Honors

Junior second baseman Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) was named one of the Collegiate Baseball Magazine National Players of the Week and was also named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday, Apr. 20.

McCallum is coming off a week that saw him bat .636 (14-for-22) with nine runs, 14 hits, six home runs, 20 RBI, a 1.636 slugging percentage and 36 total bases in five games.

He started the week going 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, two runs and six RBI in a 12-2 win over UW-Milwaukee on Apr. 14, and followed that up with a performance in a 9-6 win over South Dakota State on Apt. 15 that saw him go 3-for-4 with two home runs, three runs and six RBI.

In a three-game conference series against Illinois, McCallum batted .571 (8-for-14) with three home runs, eight RBI, two doubles and scored four runs. In the first game against the Illini, he went 3-for-5 with a run, three RBI, a home run and an RBI. It marked the first time a Golden Gopher hit home runs in three straight games since 2004.

In the second game against Illinois, McCallum reached base four times and was 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a double. McCallum was also 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in the series finale 12-8 victory over Illinois. His home run in the seventh inning put Minnesota up for good. He was also part of a pair of back-to-back home runs combinations with AJ Pettersen (in the second) and Michael Kvasnicka (in the seventh) in that game.

McCallum, who enters the week with a 20-game hitting streak, leads the Big Ten in batting average (.404), is second in slugging percentage (.709), first in RBI by seven with 52, is tied for second in total bases (100), tied for second in hits (57) and is tied for fourth in home runs (10). In Big Ten play, McCallum is fourth in batting average (.444), tied for first in home runs (4), first in RBI (17), first in slugging percentage (.844), tied for third in runs scored (13), tied for second in doubles (6) and is first in total bases (38).

Minnesota will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 22 at 4 p.m. when travels to Fargo to face North Dakota State. That game can been live on the Gold Zone and can be heard on KLBB (1220 AM).
