In high school, current Minnesota seniors Briana Hassett and Shannon Stemper played for rival teams. But a recent feature story reported by Fox 9 Sports Anchor Dawn Mitchell details how the two have become close friends since signing with the Golden Gopher softball team. The story originally aired April 11, but was recently posted online.
Hassett has become one of the best pitchers ever to wear a Minnesota uniform, breaking the Gophers' single-season strikeout record earlier this year, and needing just two more shutouts to break Vicki Swanson's 1978 record for shutouts in a season (14). She also enters today's doubleheader at Wisconsin ranked second on Minnesota's single-season charts for innings pitched (251.1) and complete games (31).
In addition, Hassett is moving up several of Minnesota’s career pitching charts, currently ranking second for strikeouts (903) and shutouts (30), third for complete games (80), and fifth for both wins (59) and innings pitched (721.1). With just 1.1 innings pitched versus the Badgers today, Hassett will move past Angie Recknor and into fourth place on Minnesota’s career list for innings pitched. Recknor totaled 722.1 IP for the Gophers during 2000-03.
Stemper has played in 157 career games for the Gophers, and currently ranks fourth on Minnesota's career list for putouts with 1,161. She is one of the best fielding catchers in the program's history, commiting just eight career errors and ranking third on the Gophers' all-time fielding percentage list with a .993 figure. At the plate this season, Stemper leads the Gophers with six doubles and 20 walks, while hitting a career-high three home runs.
