Gophers Tied for 10th after Day One

The Golden Gopher women’s golf team is in West Lafayette, Ind. this weekend for the 2009 Big Ten Championships in hopes of improving on last year’s tie for eighth place finish. After day one the team is a little shy of that goal as they head into day two in a tie for 10th place with Penn State. The Gophers are only six shots away from seventh place Iowa, however.
Minnesota shot 333 in the morning session but rebounded with a 317 in the afternoon 18 holes. The defending champion Purdue Boilermakers hold an 18-shot lead over Ohio State after posting rounds of 309 and 300 for a 36-hole score of 609.
Michigan State is in third place with a score of 629, two shots better than fourth place Michigan and 10 shots better than Northwestern and Wisconsin. Purdue’s Maude-Aimee LeBlanc holds a one-shot lead over her teammate Maria Hernandez.
Gopher sophomore Teresa Puga led Minnesota on day one with a 36-hole score of 161. She opened with an 84 but followed up with a 77 in the afternoon session and is in a tie for 23rd place. Fellow sophomore Samantha Sommers is two shots behind Puga after posting a score of 163 (81-82) and is in a tie for 32nd.
Yet another sophomore, Mary Narzisi, is a shot back of Sommers and is in a tie for 38th place after rounds of 85 and 79. Senior Paige Bromen and Kelli Berns, playing in their final Big Ten Championships, posted scores of 166 and 167, respectively, on day one. Bromen is in a tie for 44th place and Berns is in a tie for 47th. Michele Edlin is right behind them after a first day total of 168.
