Minnesota senior righthander Tom Buske (Apple Valley, Minn.) was named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week, along with Michigan's Chris Fetter according to an announcement by the Big Ten office on Monday, Apr. 27.
Buske becomes the second Golden Gopher to claim Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors this year, joining Cullen Sexton who claimed it on Mar. 2. He also became the fourth Minnesota player to collect weekly conference honors this year along with Derek McCallum (Big Ten Player of the Week on Apr. 20), AJ Pettersen (Big Ten Player of the Week on Apr. 6) and Sexton.
This past week, Buske pitched a career-high 8.2 innings, gave up eight hits, one run, did not walk a batter and tied a season-high with seven strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Purdue. The victory gave Minnesota the second win in a series that saw it sweep Purdue to move to 10-4. The 10-4 record puts the Golden Gophers in a tie for third in Big Ten play just a half game out of first place.
Buske currently leads the Big Ten in opposing batting average (.203), is second in ERA (2.34), seventh in strikeouts (54), seventh in innings pitched (65.1) and tied for fifth in wins (6).
Minnesota will be back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 28 at 6:35 p.m. when it faces St. Thomas at Siebert Field. The Golden Gophers will also travel to Brookings to face South Dakota State on Apr. 29 at 3 p.m., before hosting Iowa at Siebert Field on May 1-3. Minnesota's game against St. Thomas can be seen live on the Gold Zone.
