The Golden Gopher women’s golf team recorded a combined score of 315 in the final round of the 2009 Big Ten Championships, their best round of the weekend, and finished the tournament in 10th place. Minnesota opened with rounds of 333 and 317 on Friday and carded a 318 on Saturday for a 72-hole score of 1,283.

Purdue shot a fourth-consecutive round of 300 on Sunday to walk away with the team title by 37 shots over second place Michigan State. Ohio State finished third, three shots ahead of fourth place Northwestern and nine shots better than fifth place Iowa.

Purdue teammates Maria Hernandez and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc tied for medalist honors with a score of 9-over par 297. It was the second-consecutive Big Ten Championship for the Boilermakers as well as for Hernandez, who was named the conference player of the year.

Minnesota’s Paige Bromen made the most of her final Big Ten Championships, as the senior from Stillwater, Minn. carded a 77 on Sunday and concluded the tournament with a 72-hole score of 322. She finished in a tie for 27th and was named Minnesota’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship award. Bromen tied for 35th in last year’s championships.

Samantha Sommers, one of four sophomores in Minnesota’s lineup, shot a final round 81 for a tournament score of 323 which put her in a tie for 32nd place. Like Bromen, Sommers’ finish in the championships was better than a season ago after placing 47th as a freshman

Fellow sophomores Mary Narzisi and Teresa Puga tied for 36th and 42nd place, respectively with tournament scores of 324 and 325. Michele Edlin finished with a score of 331 while Kelli Berns, who was also playing her final championships, shot a 337 for the weekend.
