Gophers Host St. Thomas at Siebert Field

Minnesota finishes out its schedule at the Metrodome last week with a three-game sweep of Purdue, and finishes its home schedule with a midweek matchups against St. Thomas (Apr. 28), Iowa (May 1-3) and North Dakota State (May 5). This year, the Golden Gophers have a 16-4 mark at home which includes a 14-4 record at the Metrodome. Minnesota is batting .308 as a team at home, posting a .985 fielding percentage and has a sterling 3.03 team ERA in home games. The Golden Gophers finished 8-1 in conference games played at the Metrodome. Minnesota won two of three from then No. 18 Ohio State, and swept both Northwestern and Purdue. In the nine conference games at the Metrodome, Minnesota has fielded .992 making just three errors in 364 chances. The Golden Gophers have also batted .300 and posted a 2.33 ERA.

Following Sunday’s game against Iowa on Mar. 3, the Golden Gophers will honor their five seniors with a special ceremony. Three of Minnesota’s seniors (Tom Buske, Jon Hummel and Matt Nohelty) are fifth-year seniors. Tyler Oakes is a four-year senior whose freshman year was in 2006, and Chauncy Handran is in his second year with the program after transferring from Miles Community College last year. The four seniors that have played since 2006, have made two Big Ten Tournament championship game appearances and played in the NCAA Regional in 2007.

BUSKE NAMED BIG TEN CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Minnesota senior righthander Tom Buske was named Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week along with Michigan’s Chris Fetter on Monday, Apr. 27. Buske joins Cullen Sexton (3/2) as one of two Golden Gophers to claim Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors this year. He also joins Derek McCallum (4/20), AJ Pettersen (4/6) and Sexton (3/2) as one of four Minnesota players to collect weekly conference honors. Buske pitched a career-high 8.2 innings, gave up eight hits, one run, did not walk a batter and tied a season-high with seven strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Purdue. The win was Minnesota’s second of the series on the way to sweeping the Boilermakers for the first time since 2003. With the win, Buske collected his sixth victory of the season to tied Chauncy Handran for the team lead. Buske is currently 6-3 with a 2.34 ERA, and 2-3 with a 2.55 ERA in Big Ten play.
