Gophers Find Success at University Nationals

Two gopher freshmen won their weight classes with a perfect 5-0 records to highlight Minnesota’s performance at the ASICS University and FILA Cadet National Championships at the University of Akron last weekend.
Mario Mason captured the 66 kg/145.5 lb freestyle weight class, while Zach Sanders won the 55 kg/121.3 lb freestyle weight class.
Sanders, a 2009 NCAA All-American, allowed just two points during the tournament. He also had a second-round pin, and didn’t allow a point in his first three bouts.
Other Minnesota wrestlers also had enjoyed successes in the freestyle division in Akron. Sophomore Mike Thorn had a strong showing with an impressive 6-1 record and a third-place finish in the 63 kg/138.9 pound division.
After suffering first round loses both Kaleb Young and Cody Yohn made strong surges with six straight wins each. Young posted a 6-2 record for the tournament, while Yohn registered a 7-3 mark. Young also competed in the Greco-Roman class, and came away with a fifth-place finish.
Jayson Ness, Austin Enoch, and Dave Zilerberg all posted a 3-2 record in the freestyle division for the weekend.
Freshman heavyweight, Atticus Disney, had a strong start in the freestyle division with three straight pins, all in under 21 seconds. He lost steam ending the weekend with a 4-3 record, but then worked his way to the first-place bout in Greco-Roman division acquiring two pins on the way.
In the Greco-Roman sophomore Jake Mellmer grabbed a fifth-place finish competing in the 63 kg/138.9 lb class.
