Hassett and Stemper Earn Academic Recognition

University of Minnesota senior batterymates Briana Hassett and Shannon Stemper were both recognized for their success in the classroom on Thursday, as they were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 Second Team. (Click here for complete listing)

It marks the second time that Hassett and Stemper have been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), as they were both first team all-district honorees in 2008.

Hassett owns a 3.33 grade point average in business, while leading NCAA Division I softball with 401 strikeouts this season. She has establishd Minnesota single-season school records for strikeouts, complete games (37), and shutouts (14, tie), while also becoming the school's career leader for complete games (86). Hassett is 22-23 with a 1.83 earned run average, and wraps up her career at Minnesota with two games at Iowa this weekend.

Stemper is one of the finest defensive catchers in Minnesota softball history, and she maintains a 3.53 GPA in finance and insurance risk management. For the season, she leads the Big Ten with 464 putouts, while batting .226 (22-for-91) with 17 runs batted in, 16 runs scored, six doubles, and three home runs.

The Gophers (23-30, 6-12 Big Ten) conclude their regular season this weekend, with the pair of games at Iowa. Friday's first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Pearl Field, while Saturday's season finale starts at 2:00 p.m.
