Matyas Drafted in 29th Round By Yankees

Sophomore Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) was selected by the New York Yankees with the 885th overall pick in the 29th round of the 2009 Major League Draft.
Matyas is the first Golden Gopher to be drafted by the New York Yankees since Tim Grice was drafted in the 16th round in 1973. Along with Grice, Matyas joins Bob Nielsen (39th round) and Jerry Wickman (20th round) as one of only four Minnesota players to be selected by the Yankees. Matyas is also the first reliever for the Golden Gophers to be selected since John Gaub was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 21st round of the 2006 draft.
Matyas claimed Second-Team All-Big Ten honors as a reliever for the Golden Gophers. This past season, he went 0-1 with a 2.22 ERA with a school-record 15 saves and struck out 45 batters in 28.1 innings for a strikeout per nine innings ratio of 14.12.In Big Ten play, Matyas had a 2.13 ERA, a school-record 10 saves, struck out 20 batters in 12.2 innings and limited the opposition to a .159 batting average.
In postseason play, Matyas pitched five shutout innings, gave up five hits, struck out eight batters and collected a pair of saves. He only gave up a run in three of the 23 outings he made on the season. In his final 10 appearances, Matyas had nine saves, pitched 13.1 shutout innings, gave up seven hits and struck out 22 batters.
