Gophers' Night at the Lynx a Huge Success

6/24/2009 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Golden Gopher women’s basketball fans gathered at the Target Center on Tuesday to see one of their own, Janel McCarville of the New York Liberty, play against the hometown Minnesota Lynx. We saw the quick spin moves, the laser passes, a hard drive to the basket for two and another soft baseline jumper, all stirring memories of McCarville wearing the Maroon and Gold.

The Lynx played well and captured the win, perhaps a little bittersweet for the Minnesota Gopher fans in attendance, cheering on one of the most popular players to ever call Williams Arena home.

The fans enjoyed a pre-game reception attended by Gopher coaching staff (except Pam Borton who is on vacation) and three current student-athletes Ashley Ellis-Milan, Tanisha Smith and Brianna Mastey.

After the game, McCarville entertained the Gopher following with a lively Q&A session. The Gopher fans peppered the player they remember as “Shaq” with questions ranging from what it’s like playing in New York to her play overseas to her dream of making an Olympic team. A special thanks to Janel and the New York Liberty for allowing this to take place.

We received pleasant surprise when former Gopher Kadidja Andersson, who is visiting from Sweden, attended the game. Kady is making her first visit back to the States since her graduation.

A photo album of the evening is attached to this article. Check back to gophersports.com soon for some video clips of the Gophers’ Night at the Lynx.
