Rue Matches Best in Pole Vault, Roehrig Sixth

Alicia Rue matched her Minnesota school-record height of 14 feet, 3 1/4 inches to place seventh in the pole vault at the USA Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Sunday. Liz Roehrig added a sixth-place showing in the heptathlon.

Rue cleared the opening height of 13-9 1/4 on her first attempt, then bested 14-3 1/4 on her second try. She made three attempts at 14-7 1/4.

Roehrig finished the heptathlon with 5,802 points. She landed a jump of 19-10 3/4 in the long jump then added a throw of 122-1 in the javelin. Roehrig completed the heptathlon competition with a time of 2:23.73 in the 800 meters. 

Diana Pickler won the USA title with a score of 6,290 points. First-day leader Hyleas Fountain was forced to withdraw after the long jump.
