Big Ten Network to Feature Minnesota Sunday

6/5/2009 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

On Sunday, June 7, the Big Ten Network will sing "Minnesota, hats off to thee!" with 24 consecutive hours of Golden Gopher programming.

The network will air many of Minnesota's most recent and thrilling athletic performances, including the Gophers' 2009 Big Ten Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at 9 AM and 12 PM CT, respectively.  The original series, Minnesota Basketball: The Journey, filmed in 2007-08, during Tubby Smith's first year as the coach, will air in its entirety beginning at 2 PM CT.  Also, the network's original program, The Big Ten's #1 NBA Draft Picks, will air at 11 AM CT and includes former Golden Gopher power forward/center Mychal Thompson, who was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, and played in the NBA from 1978 to 1991.

The network will also air three episodes of the original series Big Ten's Greatest Games, including the stunning 2008 Big Ten Men's Basketball quarterfinal match-up against Indiana that culminated in Blake Hoffarber's miraculous last-second shot, an overtime win over Indiana in 2001, and an impressive football upset over No. 2 Penn State in 1999.

An episode Big Ten Short Stories and one of Friday Night Tailgate featuring the University of Minnesota also will be shown.

The day of Minnesota programming is the fifth of 11 full days of programming devoted to individual Big Ten universities, including Wisconsin (May 27), Illinois (May 31), Michigan State (June 1), Indiana (June 3), Northwestern (June 8), Iowa (June 10), Michigan (June 15), Ohio State (June 17), Penn State (June 21), and Purdue (June 24). Two more full days per university of school-specific programming also are planned for later in the summer.

Considered to be one of the best finishes in Big Ten Tournament history, Minnesota shocked Indiana in the tournament's quarterfinals.  The Golden Gophers, which led by as many as 16 points in the first half, found the game tied in the final minute.  With 1.5 seconds left, D.J. White hit one of two free throws to give Indiana a 58-57 edge, apparently sealing the victory.  Minnesota, however, had other plans.  Travis Busch heaved a 75-foot inbound pass from the baseline to Blake Hoffarber. Hoffarber caught the ball, spun away from two defenders, and nailed a miraculous left-handed shot that stunned a decidedly pro-Hoosier crowd at Conseco Fieldhouse.
