Minnesota had 48 student-athletes receive Distinguished Scholar Award honors according to an announcement by the Big Ten on Wednesday, July 15.

The list features student-athletes from every conference institution and 32 different sports who have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.

In February of 2008, Big Ten Faculty Representatives established a new conference academic recognition to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the new award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for their academic career.

Minnesota had athletes from 16 different teams represented among the 48 student-athletes selected for the honor. Those teams included baseball, football, men's basketball, men's gymnastics, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's hockey, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and women's track and field.

Highlighting the list for Minnesota were Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients Matt Nohelty (baseball) and Jenny Shaughnessy (women's swimming). Nine-time All-American Heather Dorniden, All-American Megan Duwell, Jamal Abu-Shamala and Second-Team All-Big Ten honoree Jack Simmons also highlighted the list of student-athletes.
