Gopher Baseball Pro Update

The Minnesota baseball program currently has three players in the Major Leagues and nine in the Minor Leagues as of July 20.

Derek McCallum is batting .277 with 20 runs and 17 RBI for the Elizabethton Twins in the Rookie Appalachian League. McCallum is batting .319 with 12 runs, 14 RBI and an .876 OPS in the month of July. He is joined in the Minnesota Twins organization by former Golden Gophers Kyle Carr, Cole DeVries and Nate Hanson.

Carr is teammates with McCallum on the Elizabethton team and is 1-0 with four saves a 1.35 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 20.0 innings in 11 outings. Carr has struck out 23 batters in 14.0 innings in July. Cole DeVries is 6-9 with a 3.63 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 96.2 innings in 18 starts for the New Britain Rock Cats of the Double-A Eastern League. Nate Hanson is batting .238 with 29 runs, 13 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBI in 70 games with the Beloit Snappers of the Single-A Midwest League.

At the Major League level, Glen Perkins is 5-5 with a 4.75 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 83.1 innings for the hometown Minnesota Twins. Perkins picked up a win at Texas on July 17, as he went five innings, gave up seven hits, three runs and struck out four batters.

Reid Mahon is currently with the Reno Aces, which is the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Mahon has one save and a 2.45 ERA in two appearances (3.2 innings, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 SO) with the Aces. He was 5-1 with a 3.21 ERA, one save and 20 strikeouts in 28.0 innings with the Double-A Mobile Bay Bears earlier in the year.

John Gaub is with the Iowa Cubs the Triple-A affiliate for the Chicago Cubs. Gaub is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA and has pitched 3.2 innings with the the Cubs in four games. Gaub went 3-1 with four saves, a 2.83 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 28.2 innings with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League, before joining the Iowa Cubs.

Tyler Oakes is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 15.0 innings for the Princeton Rays in the Appalachian Rookie League. Oakes has limited opponents to a .188 batting average in four games in July. Gary Perinar is 2-2 with a 6.27 ERA and has 19 strikeouts in 18.2 innings with the Oneonta Tigers in the short-season New York Penn League, while Dan Lyons is batting .183 with 18 runs and 17 RBI in for the Potomac Nationals in Single-A.

At the Major League level, Robb Quinlan is batting .229 with seven runs and six RBI for the AL West leading Los Angeles Angels. Jack Hannahan was traded to the Seattle Mariners on July 11. Hannahan had played 52 games for the Oakland Athletics, and has now played five games for the Mariners.
