Braun Wins 400 Free at Speedo Series

Megan Braun won the 400-meter freestyle during the third day of the Speedo Champions Series, held until Saturday at the University Aquatic Center. Along with her win, Minnesota Aquatics also won the 800 free relay.
Braun accomplished the win when she touched the wall in a first-place time of 4:19.35. After clocking a prelim time of 4:22.94, Braun shaved time off in the finals to earn an Open qualifying time, which is 4:19.49. Following Braun in second place was Courtney Veerman, who held a time of 4:21.50, while incoming freshman Lauren Weis finished in 4:21.55 for third.
Minnesota took the top two spots in the 800 free relay. The foursome of Veerman, Stacy Busack, Alison Eggers and Meagan Radecke combined for a meet-record, Open qualifying time of 8:21.92 for the the win and 40 points. Following behind them was the Minnesota's other relay of Marissa Davies, Megan Braun, Lissa Tommerdahl and Melissa Nelson. They chipped in a second-place time of 8:26.26.
Although the Gophers didn't win the 200 back competition, three swimmers were in the championship final. Castina Wabeke led the Gopher contingent with a third-place time of 2:18.02. Andrea Hanson placed sixth overall (2:20.18), while Hannah Whitehead was eighth in 2:21.09.
Molly Belk, a butterflyer, earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke when she held a time of 1:10.95. Kimberly Kazika won the 100 breast consolation final in a time of 1:12.98. Minnesota also held the 3,4,5 spot in the 100 fly. Kaylee Jamison placed third in the event (1:00.94), while Braun was fourth (1:02.05) and Jenna Lennertz was fifth (1:02.08). Jillian Tyler won the consolation final in 1:01.81.
