Gophers Win Four Times On Third Day of Speedo Series

Minnesota won four of the five events at the USA Swimming Speedo Champions Series event Friday evening at University Aquatic Center. Rob Schnitzler, Kevin Baseheart and Mike Holmes were victorious individually while the Gophers also claimed the 800 freestyle relay.
Schnitzler clocked a time of 1:03.43 to win the 100-meter breaststroke while incoming freshman Josh Hall was fifth in 1:04.99. Junior Rob Schaefer also placed sixth and junior Zach Weis took 12th in the consolation final.
In the 100 butterfly, Baseheart edged teammate Alex Wold for the title. Baseheart turned in a 54.69 to touch out Wold's effort of 54.97. Wold has finished first or second in all five of his individual events to this point. Curt Carlson also finished fourth in 55.96 while Steve Miller took 11th in the consolation final and Chris Peterson was 13th.
Graduated senior Mike Holmes won the 400 freestyle in 3:58.06 and Nico Zebley was fourth in 4:06.33. Matt Papenfuss also placed 17th in 4:09.24.
Minnesota closed the evening by winning the 800 freestyle relay in a meet record 7:32.21. Papenfuss, Carlson, Miller and Wold teamed to set the record time.
Saturday night will mark the final night of the four-day competition at University Aquatic Center.
