A pair of seniors will each wear the captain’s jersey for the University of Minnesota men’s hockey team during the 2009-10 season as Ryan Flynn and Tony Lucia have been named co-captains.

The duo will be among six seniors for the Gophers this season. Flynn is the lone returning captain from the 2008-09 team after serving as an assistant captain last season. Lucia is in his first season as a team captain. The assistant captains will be named later this fall.

“It was evident by the team vote that Ryan and Tony would be our captains for 2009-10,” Minnesota head coach Don Lucia said. “Both are extremely hard working, team focused and representative of the program on and off the ice in a positive manner.”

Flynn, a forward from Lino Lakes, Minn., was one of four players to play in all 37 games last season and totaled six goals and 13 assists for 19 points. He has played in 118 career games at Minnesota and has 47 points over the past three seasons.

Lucia, a forward from Plymouth, Minn., compiled nine goals and eight assists for 17 points in 34 games during 2008-09. He won the team’s Unsung Hero Award last season and enters his senior year with 54 career points in 121 games played.

Flynn and Lucia carry on a Gopher tradition of captains that dates to the first season of Gopher hockey in 1921-22. They have already assumed their roles, leading the team’s off-season conditioning program this summer.

“They’ve already started to establish our team’s identity with their hard work in the weight room,” Don Lucia said. “We will add our assistant captains in September before the season starts.”
