Gopher Women's Golf Team to Hold Open Tryouts

The University of Minnesota women's golf program announced today that it will be conducting walk-on open tryouts on Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13. at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course.

The University of Minnesota women's golf program has fielded teams every year since 1975, or for 33 seasons, and statistically, the 2008-09 Gophers are the best the program has seen. Minnesota averaged a combined score of 311.04 for a stroke average of 77.85, bettering the 1987-88 team that averaged 77.97 for the season.
The Gophers finished in the top 10 in eight of the team's 10 tournaments this season, five of which were also top-five finishes. The Gophers' worst finish of the season was a 16th place finish at the Las Vegas Invitational, however, the team's 54-hole score of 885 is the lowest 54-hole tournament is program history
Individually, sophomore Teresa Puga established the program's lowest fall season scoring average of 74.07 and finished the spring with a stroke average of 77.78, 13th-best in history. Her season average of 76.28 is the second-lowest in program history. Kate Hughes, arguably the best player in school history, holds the record of 75.51.
The Gophers will open the 2009-10 season on Sept. 13-14 at the Michigan State Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan.
