Wold Finishes Eighth In 200 Fly At U.S. Open

University of Minnesota senior Alex Wold finished eighth in the 200-meter butterfly to lead Gophers competing on the first day of competition at the U.S. Open in Federal Way, Wash.
In the morning prelims, Wold shattered the varsity long course record in the event with a time of 1:59.37 to qualify sixth for the championship final. Wold followed with a finals time of 1:59.47 as Hidemasa Sano of the Trojan Swim Club won in 1:56.39. Junior Kevin Baseheart qualified for the C Final as well, where he ended up placing 18th overall in 2:01.07.
Incoming freshman Michael McBroom had a strong swim in the 1500-meter freestyle, placing eighth in 15:31.83. Senior Nico Zebley also finished 34th in 16:19.33.
In the other event of the day, incoming freshman Josh Hall led Minnesota with a 33rd place showing in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:21.12. Rob Schaefer also took 43rd in 2:22.60.
The meet continues through Saturday.
